These days, many aspects of home water and plumbing are overlooked. One of the most common aspects includes the flow of home water and pressure in the pipes. You may not want to take your water pressure for granted as low water pressure may be due to several plumbing problems. Let's find out more.

If you have very low pressure, chances are that your plumbing system is clogged. Similarly, if the pressure is too high, it will overburden the system, which may result in water leakage. Since I have a lot of experience in the hot tub and swimming pool industry, I teach my workers to monitor the water pressure in the filtration system.

What should be the ideal pressure of water in your house?

Different experts have different opinions about this matter. However, most plumbers are of the opinion that if the water pressure is more than 80 PSI, it will be considered too high. On the other hand, some experts suggest that the maximum water pressure should be 50 PSI.

This is the reason most of the pressure-reducing valves are designed for a maximum pressure level of 50 PSI. You may have low incoming household water pressure. According to rules and regulations in most cities, the minimum water pressure for domestic water lines is 20 PSI. As far as my opinion is concerned, I would say even 30 PSI is not enough to cover household needs.

In my opinion, the minimum pressure should be 40 PSI for incoming household supply lines. Ideally, it is great if the water pressure fluctuates between 40 PSI and 60 PSI.

How can you Test your Home Water Pressure?

An easy way to test water pressure is to use a low-pressure gauge that comes with a hose adaptor. With this type of tester, you can measure water pressure up to 200 PSI. Since these testers come with a hose adaptor, you can use a spigot to test the water pressure.

All you need to do is attach the pressure gauge to the spigot. Afterward, you can take a reading after opening up the spigot. You don't need to worry if the reading is between 40 PSI and 60 PSI. If the reading is too low or too high, you have a problem to deal with.

What are the Causes of Low Water Pressure?

If the pressure is too low, there can be many causes. Let's take a look at some of the most common causes.

Low Incoming Pressure

You only need to check your domestic plumbing system if the incoming water pressure is good. Also, if the incoming water pressure is too low, you may want to get in touch with your plumber to check your home plumbing system.

You can also call your municipal water supplier to find out if they can help you solve the problem. Before you make this call, don't forget to make sure that the main shut-off valve is fully open or not.

Blockage And Restrictions In your domestic Plumbing Lines

If your plumbing lines are clogged or restricted, you may have low water pressure problems. In most cases, a clogged plumbing system is due to the buildup of limescale. Generally, if your incoming water has a high TDS level, your plumbing lines may get clogged sooner or later. This type of tap water is known as hard water.

With the passage of time, your plumbing pipes will continue to accumulate limescale. Eventually, it will block the pipeline at several places preventing water from flowing through. If you are having this problem frequently, we suggest that you test your tap water for hardness level.

Leakage In your home Plumbing Lines

Another cause of low water pressure is the leakage in plumbing lines. Due to leakage, you will have low pressure. If there are multiple leakage points, you will have even lower water pressure.

Defective Pressure Valve

If the incoming water pressure is fine, you can fix your waterline with a pressure regulator. These devices come with a regulator valve. With the passage of time, these regulators go through a lot of wear and tear. Eventually, they become clogged and restrict the flow of water.

Increase In Water Supply Pressure

You should check your incoming water pressure. If it is too high, you can control it using a powerful water pressure regulator.

Defective Pressure Valve

Again, if you have a defective pressure regulator installed on your mainline, you will need to replace it to fix a problem. You can consult your plumber to find out if they can repair or replace the unit.

Can A Water Filtration System reduce Water Pressure?

As far as the water pressure is concerned, you may have heard two popular terms "filter" and "restriction". A filter is a type of device that is installed on a water supply line in order to filter the water. Based on the type of water filter, it will reduce the water pressure, which will have no impact on the water pressure.

It is essential to keep in mind that clean water filters don't have much impact on the flow of water in most cases. However, there are some exceptions. For example, if you have a reverse osmosis system, it may not have a high water pressure due to the type of filter the device contains.

When these filters are not clean or they are too old, they may restrict the water flow significantly. In this situation, the only solution will be to replace the filter as soon as possible. This is how you can resume the flow of water.
